Low water pressure may be one of the most frustrating plumbing problems for a Las Vegas household, but did you know that high water pressure is one of the most potentially damaging problems to have? It’s true - high water pressure can cause a lot of problems in your home. Worse still, most of this damage is unnoticeable until it’s too late!

Symptoms of High Water Pressure in House

The easiest way to find out if the water pressure in your home is too high is, of course, to use a water pressure gauge. Failing that, you can tell if your water pressure is too high in two main ways;

  • Rattling pipes
  • Dripping faucets

If your pipes bang and rattle when you turn faucets on and off, or your faucets continually drip no matter how you tighten them, this is a strong sign that your water pressure is too high. For those not in the know, your water pressure should not exceed 80 PSI. Anything above this level is classed as high water pressure and can be very damaging to your plumbing, appliances, and home.

How High Water Pressure Damages Your Homes Plumbing System

High water pressure negatively affects your whole plumbing system and will increase the rate of wear and tear on your pipes and plumbing system as a whole. However, high water pressure also increases the risks of breakdowns and leaks. These are the 3 most common problems caused by high water pressure;

1. Leaking Fixtures

Your faucets, shower, and even toilet may leak or consistently drip when your water pressure is too high, This is not only irritating and wasteful (your water bill will certainly rise), but it can cause permanent damage to the washers and joints of the pipes which feed these fixtures. The worst-case scenario is that you may need to replace your fixtures completely.

2. Burst Pipes

If your pipes are old they are at particular risk of bursting when under pressure. High water pressure may cause pipes to jump and rattle. This puts a strain on the connections between them, other pipes, and appliances within your home. If the pressure continues, a pipe may break free of its connection, likewise, older pipes with weak spots or rust may spontaneously crack in the middle. In either case, you will end up with water leaking into your walls, which is never a good thing.

3. Appliance Breakdown

If you have just repaired or replaced your washing machine or dishwasher and have noticed that it is already starting to fail, your water pressure may be too high. High water pressure can damage the delicate parts inside your appliances, or even cause their water supply to break away entirely. This can result in appliance breakdown and flooding within your home.
